An all too common occurrence in rural areas of Newfoundland and Labrador is the emergency, fund-raising activities that take place when a young child is seriously ill and must travel considerable distances to access healthcare facilities. Needless to say, as those of us who are parents are well aware, these illnesses are very traumatic experiences not to mention very expensive.
In 1995, a group of local service clubs headed up by the Knights of Columbus, businesses, and the community at large decided to get together to see what could be done to address the concerns of the amount of fund-raising that was going on in the community. The general consciences of the group was to form an organization which would address these very issues. A major concern was that families finding themselves in these situations might not be getting sufficient financial assistance through the good-hearted efforts of family or friends who undertake these haphazard events. Of fundamental importance was the desire to help relieve the stress on parents in such a way that permitted them to focus one hundred percent on the health needs of their child.
1. Thus on March 20th 1996, the Bay St. George Sick Children's Foundation Inc. came into existence. In the past 14 (of 25 years), the Foundation has provided more than 593 families with financial assistance costing more than $904,000.00. The children we serve have travelled to various health care facilities in London, Guelph, Toronto, Ottawa, and Halifax and of course the facilities in St. John's. Often, the length of stay at these facilities to require medical care involves months at a time. Also, it is not uncommon for families to spend several years traveling back and forth for medical care/treatment. In all these circumstances, we have assisted. On average each year, we provide more than 315 days/nights of accommodations to sick children and their families. The Foundation is a one hundred percent volunteer organization. There are no paid employees and administrative expenses have been maintained at less than three percent for each year of its existence. Financial resources are allocated to get maximum benefit for the children of the Bay St. George area. Let us continue to be "Your Children's Helping Hand." Because we care.

The Bay St. George Sick Children's Foundation shall provide financial resources to support working families with sick children in their time of need throughout the Bay St. George region, now and into the foreseeable future. The Board of Directors shall provide for the governance, policy direction, and day-to-day operation of the Foundation. Through a community network of fundraising and support from individuals, groups, business, and key sponsors, and its annual telethon, the Foundation will raise funds to meet its mandate for now and the long term. The Board of Directors will continue to operate the Foundation on a volunteer basis and only essential funds will be distributed for operating expenses. As long as there are children in the Bay St. George area requiring medical care that is not available here, the Foundation will provide assistance to their families to ease the financial burden in their time of need.Board Members
